New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Saturday that President Donald Trump had agreed to grant an immediate visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy killed in a Bronx shooting.
Writing on X after a phone call with Trump, Mamdani said the teenager’s mother wanted to come to New York to say goodbye to her son. Al Jazeera reported on November 1 that Trump had not immediately commented; the report did not confirm that the visa had been issued.
Surveillance footage showed three teenagers chasing Frimpong on Thursday morning while he was heading to school. He was shot in the abdomen and died in a hospital that day. Police said they were investigating, with no arrests reported at the time of publication.
Frimpong’s parents had sent him to the United States a year earlier in hopes of giving him a better life. He had told his father, Thomas Frimpong, that he was being bullied at school. His father called for police to secure justice, while thousands attended vigils across the city.
Ghana’s foreign minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, said Ghanaian officials were working with local authorities and assisting the teenager’s mother with her visa application.
